Labyrinths of Our Longing: Existential Pilgrimages

The Church as a Place for Dreaming Pilgrims and for Pilgriming Dreamers...

Two students are to be blamed for getting me into this site.

A caveat: some friends have told me that they do not understand items i have posted on this site, particularly the blog area. I am not particularly enamored with "publishing" each and every thought i happen to have. But I love to share things other people have said which i find to be gems of insight, profound, sharp, and illuminating of this or that human experience. If you don't understand something, then ask me what it is all about. I'd be happy to oblige you in your desire to understand some bit of our world.

I must admit this is a great way to store pics... Hope you like them. Believe it or not, many pics were taken from my cellphone's camera; other pics were taken from other sites or borrowed from friends.. Quality of my pics is not so good, but they do hold many meaningful memories for me... Check out the Culion pics... But before you do so, take time to read this beautiful if sobering piece from Walther Burghardt, S.J.:

I LOVE THIS CHURCH

In the course of a half century,
I have seen more Christian corruption
than you have read of.

I have tasted it.
I have been reasonably corrupt myself.

And yet, I love this Church,
this living, pulsing, sinning people of God
with a crucifying passion.

Why?

For all the Christian hate,
I experience here a community of love.

For all the institutional idiocy,
I find here a tradition of reason.

For all the individual repressions,
I breathe here an air of freedom.

For all the fear of sex,
I discover here the redemption of my body.

In an age so inhuman,
I touch here tears of compassion.

In a world so grim and humorless,
I share here rich joy and earthy laughter.

In the midst of death,
I hear an incomparable stress on life.

For all the apparent absence of God,
I sense here the real presence of Christ.

-- Walter Burghardt, S.J.
